CHENNAI (MADRAS)

LE FastCounter

Chennai (Madras), the capital of the state of Tamil Nadu, is the fourth largest city in the country of India. The city has a decidedly British air to it, primarily due the fact that it was under British rule for most of its history. Chennai is tropical by nature, located on the Bay of Bengal.

The city has a great deal to offer the visitor in the way of interesting sights and activities. Perhaps the oddest visitor’s attraction in the city is the Madras Snake Park, where over 500 species of snakes and reptiles are on display!

For the more traditional tourist, be sure to visit both the Government Museum and the National Art Gallery. Fort St. George is the center of the city and houses the state legislature and various political offices. The Marina is impossible to miss, as it is the world’s second largest beachfront area. However, these beaches are not for swimming as the waters are shark-infested. None-the-less it is a beautiful place with a flower-lined boardwalk.

Chennai offers excellent hotels and transport, a terrific cottons and course, magnificent old Hindus temples that offer more than just a fabulous photo opportunity to the discerning! Savour Chennai, for a true feel of India, enticingly different from the tourist tracks of the Delhi-Agra-Jaipur triangle.
Chennai, the cultural centre of South India and gateway to the state of Tamil Nadu, is a fascinating jumble dominated by glittering high-rise emporia and corporate buildings . Cinema and politics are the major beats on the streets. But look between the psychedelic flashes and you'll glimpse the sepia-toned charm of colonial history.

More, you'll hear the splendid strains of classical music and sniff a heady compound of Jasmines and spices, living traditions that are still savoured from Chennai's ancient past.

Chennai has a mixed population of South Indians and North Indians. Apart from Tamilians and people hailing from Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka; Chennai has a sizeable number of Gujarathis, Marwaris, Punjabis and people belonging to the Parsi , each group adding its colors to the rich tapestry of the modern city of Chennai .

Chennai is the base for automobile manufacturing giants like Ford, Hyundai, Ashok Leyland; Nylon giant Dupont; and is the home for Indian tyre giant MRF.
